Sabancı University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences has activated an annual article award to be administered by Sabancı University SU Gender Excellence Center in memory of Dicle Koğacıoğlu starting from 2010.
The award aims to encourage young researchers and support gender studies on Turkish society and culture. The competition is open to all graduate students of social sciences and humanities, as well as researchers within two years of a graduate degree. Articles will be evaluated by an inter-institutional committee anonymously.
A limited number of participants will be invited to a one-day conference to present their work. Winners will be announced at the end of the conference.

Dicle Koğacıoğlu Article Award and Graduate Student Conference 2018
Organized by Sabanci University Gender and Women’s Studies Center of Excellence (SU Gender) in collaboration with Sabanci University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, the ninth Dicle Koğacıoğlu Article Award Ceremony and Conference took place on 22 December 2018.
This year; Fulya Pınar was awarded the first prize with her article, “Feminist Lawyers in Istanbul: From Within and Against the Legal Field”. Pelin Kılınçarslan won the second prize with her article “Being and Living in Debt: Everyday Experiences of Women in Greece and Turkey", and Mine Egbatan was awared the third prize with her article “Chasing Femina Grata of 'Ulus': A Sketch of Neoliberal Revanchist Policies in Ankara". In addition to award winners, Seran Demiral, Özlem Şimşek, Okan Şeker made contributions to the conference by their presentations.
Umut Türem, Dicle Koğacıoğlu’s colleague and friend from Boğaziçi University, gave the openning speech of the conference. Türem said, “Koğacıoğlu opened new pathways in law and social studies in Turkey. She made great contributions to gender studies literature, and wrote about honor killings, gender-based violence and killings.”
The first panel of the conference is moderated by Füsun Ertuğ from Kadın Eserleri Kütüphanesi ve Bilgi Merkezi (The Women’s Library and Information Centre Foundation). The second panel was moderated by Seval Şahin from Mimar Sinan Guzel Sanatlar University. In this panel, Seran Demiral (Mimar Sinan Guzel Sanatlar University) presented on “Non-Bodies: Gendered Bodies and Embodied Emotions of Suat Derviş’s Characters From Dark’ness to Nothing’ness", Özlem Şimşek (Mimar Sinan Guzel Sanatlar University) presented on “Embodying Militarism or Demanding of Equal Citizenship? Posing in a Military Uniform as a Practice of Cross-dressing: 1930-1940s", and Okan Şeker (Marmara University) presented on “Change in Gender Roles of Syrian Refugees”.
Dicle Koğacıoğlu Article Award is organized in memory of young sociologist Dicle Kogocaioglu who passed away in 2009. Organized by SU Gender in collaboration with Sabanci University Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the award ceremony and conference aims to encourage young researchers and support studies focusing on gender in Turkey.
The award was re-designed this year in memory of Bayram Candan, a renowned artist who passed away 5 years ago. The award design was adapted from the artist’s piece “Özgür Ayşe”. An image of this piece has been still used in Dicle Koğacıoğlu Article Award posters.
In 2017, the 8th of Dicle Koğacıoğlu Article Award will be given. The aim of this award is to support young researchers doing research on gender about social and cultural issues in Turkey. MA and PhD students as well as MA graduates who graduated in the past two years from all fields of social sciences and humanities can apply. This years award is 3000 TL for the first degree, 1500 TL for the second and 1000 TL for the third.

Dicle Koğacıoğlu Article Award and Graduate Student Conference 2017
Held by the Sabanci University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Center of Excellence for Gender and Women’s Studies and Kadın Eserleri Kütüphanesi, the 8th Dicle Koğacıoğlu Article Awards were presented on Saturday, December 23, 2017 at a ceremony following a student conference at the Minerva Palas in Karaköy.
This year's first prize shared with Gizem Türkaslan with her paper, “Siyasetin Kıskacında: Tunus ve Türkiye'de Kadın Örgütleri ve Vatandaşlık Eylemleri” and Leyla Bektaş with her paper titled "Anneler Ne Yapar, Kızları Ne İster? İki Nesil Kadın Anlatılarında Bir Gecekondu Mahallesi", and the third prize shared with Yeşim Mutlu and Mehtap Tosun's article titled "Mesafeleri Aşan Sessizlik: Diyarbakır'dan Çanakkale'ye Güvenlik Anlatıları" and Özlem Şendeniz's article titled “Bahçeden Pazara: Pazarcı Kadınların Anlatımları ile Fındıklı Kadınlar Pazarı".
In addition to the award winners, Göksenin Abdal “Yalçın Tosun Öykülerinde LGBTİ Kimliklerinin İnşası” and Semih Evciman “Türkiye’de Zorunlu Askerlik Bağlamında Vatandaşlık, Milliyetçi-Militarist (Hegemonik) Erkeklik, ‘Sakalık’-Gazilik ve Yazı Tura Örneği” deserved to receive a plaque of thanks.

Established by the Sabanci University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and Center of Excellence for Gender and Women’s Studies, the Dicle Koğacıoğlu Article Awards were presented on Saturday, December 24, 2016 at a ceremony following a student conference at the Minerva Palas in Karaköy.
This year's first prize went to Gülnur Kocapınar from Sabancı Üniversity and Kerem Yıldırım from Duke University with their paper, “Gender Gap in Elections: Nomination and Representativeness”, the second prize went to Esin Düzel from University of California, Sen Diego with her paper, “Natural Beauty: Kurdish Women's Politics of Visibility and Empowerment”, and the third prize went to Leyla Bektaş from Hacettepe University with her paper, “Attempt of Auto-Ethnography: Living in a Gated Community”.
In addition to the award winners Fethiye Beşir from METU presented her paper, " 'Çekme' Narratives in the East Black Sea Region: Marriage By Abduction as a Ritual", Hatice Haskul from Sabanci University presented her paper, “Destruction of the Existing Walls to Construct Ideal Place: Refet's Dream of a House, Handan's Reality of the Coffin”, and Göksenin Abdal from Istanbul University presented his article, “An Evaluation of English Translation of Asli Erdogan’s Book Titled "the City In Crimson Cloak" Through the Concepts of Gender and Rewriting in Translation Theory: Understanding Geography, Interpreting Culture, Expanding the Borders”.

This year's first prize went to Nisa Göksel from Northwestern University with her paper "Motherhood in an Alternative Political Sphere: Understanding the Political and Ethical Struggle of Mothers for Peace", second prize to Caner Hazar from the University of Connecticut with his paper "Gender Performance as an Everyday Strategy in Turkey", and third prize to Çağlar Çetin with the paper "The Collective Failure of Men to Cope with Failure: Possible Strategies for Addressing the Issues and Shortcomings of Men's Organizations in Turkey That Oppose Gender Regimes". In addition to the award winners, Arzu Maltaş Erol and Ferda Aşık from Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey University presented their paper "Women's Quest for a City: Experiences of Place in Anatolian Universities" and Hilal Kara from Middle East Technical University presented her paper "A Home Worker on the Road: Understanding the City from the Perspective of 'Housekeeping' Women."

Dicle Koğacıoğlu Article Award and Graduate Student Conference 2014
Sabancı University’s Faculty of Art and Social Science and Gender and Women’s Studies Forum realized the fifth graduate student and award ceremony in memory of Dicle Koğacıoğlu. The first prize was awarded to Pınar Karababa Kayalıgil for her article entitled “Odaları Açmak: Kadınların Kendi Mekanını Oluşturması”.
The fifth Dicle Koğacıoğlu graduate student conference was held by Sabancı University’s Gender and Women’s Studies Forum on December 27, 2012, at Karaköy Minerva Palace. Following the graduate conference; an award ceremony realized and the prize holders received their awards.
At the beginning of the graduate student conference Tuğçe Ellialtı, a former student of Dicle Koğacıoğlu who is a graduate of Sabancı University’s Cultural Studies MA Program delivered her speech “Öğrencisinin Gözünden Dicle Koğacıoğlu”.
The first prize of Dicle Koğacıoğlu Article Award 2014 was rewarded to Pınar Karababa Kayalıgil from Middle East Technical University for her article “Odaları Açmak: Kadınların Kendi Mekanını Oluşturması”. The second prize was awarded to Aslı Zengin from York University for her article titled “Sevginin Ölüm Dünyası: Aile, Arkadaşlık ve Trans Kadın Cenazeleri” and finally the third prize was awarded to Melike Gül Demir from Maltepe University for her article “Kentin Çeperlerinde ‘Barış’a Tutunmak: Kürt Kadınlarının Dilinden Köy Boşaltmaları”. The honorable mention prize was awarded to Derya Acuner from Bilgi University for her article “Canavarlaş(tırıl)an Kent Sokakları: Kadının Kent Deneyimi Üzerine Bir Değerlendirm” . They received their prize from Nihat Berker, Sibel Irzık, Nakiye Boyacigiller and Ferhunde Özbey.

Dicle Koğacıoğlu Article Award and Graduate Student Conference 2013
The Dicle Koğacıoğlu Article Award was established by the Sabancı University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and Gender and Women's Studies Forum in memory of Dicle Koğacıoğlu in 2010. The aim of this award is to support and motivate young researchers and their research on Turkish society and Turkish culture with a gender focus. The award is open to all social sciences graduate students and to all social sciences MA students who have graduated within the last two years. Every year the winning articles are announced during a young researches conference.
The fourth Dicle Koğacıoğlu Article Award Graduate Student Conference was held by Sabancı University’s Gender and Women’s Studies Forum on December 28, 2013, at Karaköy Minerva Palace. Following the graduate conference, an award ceremony was held and the prize holders received their awards. The members of this year’s selecting committee were Füsun Üstel (Galatasaray University), Hülya Canbakal (Sabancı University), Sevgi Uçan Çubukçu (İstanbul University) and Süha Oğuzertem (Istanbul Bilgi University).
The first prize was awarded to Pınar Ensari from Sabancı University, the second prize to Nihan Bozok from Middle East Technical University and finally the third prize was awarded to Ayşen Üstübici from Koç University. Mehtap Tosun was awarded honorary mention.
The conference started with Ferhunde Özbay’s opening remarks. Ferhunde Özbay from Department of Sociology, Bogazici University, once Dicle Koğacıoğlu’s lecturer and mentor, then colleague and friend talked about Dicle’s legacy and her contribution to the academic world.
At the student conference two sessions were held. At the first panel in which Ayşe Öncü from Sabancı University was the discussant the prize winning articles were presented. In this panel Pınar Ensari (Sabancı University) presented her article titled “Kurtarılmış Bir Kürt Gibi Hani”: Doğu ve Güneydoğu Anadolu'daki Kürt Kadınlarının Eğitimle İlişkisini Yeniden Düşünmek; Nihan Bozok (METU) her article Hikayeler Anlatılırken Özne(l)likler Kurmak: Anne, Yurt, Jilet başlıklı and finally Ayşen Üstübici (Koç University) presented her article titled Düzensiz göçün cinsiyet halleri: Riskler, Entegrasyon(?), Yasal Statü ve Korumaya Erişim.
In the second panel, the articles that were chosen by the jury as worth-mentioning were presented. Begüm Başdaş from Istanbul Bilgi University chaired this session. Mehtap Tosun (METU) who also received the honorary mention by the jury presented her article titled Emeğin Fiziksel ve Toplumsal Görünmezliğinden bir Kesit: Kadın Emeğinin Dersim'de Enformel Konumlanışı. Dilara Çalışkan (Sabancı University) presented her paper titled"Trans* Seks İşçisi Anneler ve Kızları: İstanbul'daki Trans* Cemaatinin Sistematik Polis Şiddetine Karşı Mücadelesinde Hafıza Geçişinin Rolü" and Ozan Soybakış (Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales) presented his paper titled Kamusal Alanda Bir Saklambaç Oyunu: Toplumsal Cinsiyetten Muzdarip « Bir Başka » Erkekler.
Dicle Koğacıoğlu’s family, academicians, young researchers, her former students, colleagues, and friends attended the conference and the award ceremony.

Dicle Koğacıoğlu Article Award and Graduate Student Conference 2012
Sabancı University’s Faculty of Art and Social Science and Gender and Women’s Studies Forum realized the third graduate student and award ceremony in memory of Dicle Koğacıoğlu on December 15, 2012, at Karaköy Minerva Han. Following the graduate conference; an award ceremony realized and the prize holders received their awards.
The aim of this award was to promote successful current academic research on Turkey’s society and culture with a gender focus among young scholars and graduate students from Turkey. 25 applications from 12 different universities was received in 2012.The first prize of Dicle Koğacıoğlu Article Award 2012 was rewarded to Beril Türkoğlu from Middle East Technical University for her article “Fay Hattındaki Erkeklikler: Çalışma ve İşsizlik Ekseninde Erkekliğe Bakış”. The second prize was awarded to Seher Kırbaş Canıkoğlu from Ankara University for her article titled “Feminist Bir Perspektifle Türk Ceza Kanunu’nda Cinsel Saldırı Suçu” and finally the third prize was awarded to Nacide Berber from Istanbul University for her article “Özel Sektörde Yönetici Kadınların Cinsiyet Kimliği ve Feminizm Algısı”. The winners received their prize from Sabancı University Art and Social Science’s Dean Mehmet Baç.
At the graduate student conference a panel was held with the moderation of Sabancı University Art and Social Science Cultural Studies’ member Ayşe Gül Altınay. During the session Beril Türkoğlu from Middle Easr Technical, Seher Kırbaş Canıkoğlu from Ankara University and Nacide Berber from Istanbul University presented their article and discussed the outcomes with the participants.

Sabancı University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences has activated an annual article award to be administered by Sabancı University Gender and Women's Studies Forum in memory of Dicle Koğacıoğlu starting in 2010. 2011 yılında makale ödülünün ikincisi gerçekleştirilecektir.
The award aims to encourage young researchers and support gender studies on Turkish society and culture. The competition is open to all graduate students of social sciences and humanities, as well as researchers within two years of a graduate degree. Articles will be evaluated by an inter-institutional committee anonymously.
The prizes for the Dicle Koğacıoğlu Article Award for 2011 have been determined as follows: 1000 TL for first prize, 750 TL for second prize, 500 TL for third prize. A limited number of participants will be invited to a one-day conference to present their work. Winners will be announced at the end of the conference.
Application Requirements:
- All entries should be unpublished, new and original.
- Article length should not exceed 6000 words including headings, footnotes and references. All footnotes should appear at the end of the article, not the end of each page. The language of the article should be Turkish.
- An abstract of 500 words and the curriculum vitae of the writer should be sent along with the article.
- Name, surname, institution, postal and e-mail addresses of the participant should be clearly stated.
- The article, abstract, curriculum vitae and communication information should be sent to skogaciogluodulu@sabanciuniv.edu as a Word file.
Deadline for the submission of articles is October 7, 2011.
Dicle Koğacıoğlu Article Award and Graduate Student Conference 2011
Sabancı University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and Gender and Women’s Studies Forum realized the second graduate student conference in memory of Dicle Koğacıoğlu on December 17, 2011, at Karaköy Communication Center. The aim of this award was to promote successful current academic research on Turkey’s society and culture with a gender focus among young scholars and graduate students from Turkey.
Ayşe Öncü and Akşin Somel from Sabancı University; Yeşim Arat and Nüket Esen from Boğaziçi University and Fatmagül Berktay from İstanbul University who were the members of the final jury, evaluated the articles anonymously and determined the three award winning papers. The jury also found two articles to be worthy of presentation at the student conference.
The first prize was awarded to Zeynep Selan Artan- Bayhan from City University of New York and to her article titled “Bir Cinayetin Anatomisi: Medya, Şiddet ve Toplumsal Cinsiyet”. The second prize was awarded to Aylin Demir from Middle East Technical University for her article “Cinsiyetlendirilean Türler (Genre): Dersim Deneyiminde Sözlü Şiir ve Ağlama Pratikleri” and finally the third prize was awarded to Sidar Çınar from Marmara University for her article “Ev Eksenli Çalışan Kadınların İlişki Ağları: Sömürü İlişkileri ve Toplumsal Farklılıklar Eşliğinde Dayanışma”.
At the student conference two sessions were held. At the first session Damla Bayraktar from Koç University and Sidar Çınar presented their articles in which Burcu Yakut-Çakar from Boğaziçi University was the discussant. The second session was discussed by Ayşe Öncü from Sabancı University and the two presentators were Aylin Demir and Zeynep Selen Artan- Bayhan. Zeynep Selan Artan- Bayhan couldn’t participate since she continues her graduate studies at New York. However she shared an audio presentation.

Dicle Koğacıoğlu Article Award and Graduate Student Conference 2010
Sabancı University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and Gender and Women’s Studies Forum realized the first graduate student conference in memory of Dicle Koğacıoğlu on October 23, 2010, at Karaköy Communication Center. The aim of this award was to promote successful current academic research on Turkey’s society and culture with a gender focus among young scholars and graduate students.
28 articles from 16 different universities were submitted to Dicle Koğacıoğlu Article Award; Ankara University, Bilgi University, Bilkent University, Boğaziçi University; Dokuz Eylül University, European Inter-University Human Rights Institution, Galatasaray University, Hacettepe University, İstanbul Technical University, İstanbul University, Marmara University, Mimar Sinan University, Muğla University, Middle East Technical University, Radboud University, Sabancı University and York University.
A preliminary committee composed of academicians from Sabancı University assessed the 28 submitted articles and selected 12 of them to be evaluated anonymously by the final jury. Ayşe Öncü and Akşin Somel from Sabancı University; Meltem Ahıska and Nüket Esen from Boğaziçi University and Fatmagül Berktay from İstanbul University who were the members of the final jury, evaluated the 12 articles anonymously and determined the three award winning papers. The jury also found three articles to be worthy of presentation at the student conference.
The first prize was awarded to Özlem Ezer from York University and to her article titled “Bir'in ve Dil'in Hegemonyasından Kurtulmak: Yaşam Yazımında Çokseslilik”. The second prize was awarded to Doğu Durgun from Sabancı University for his article “Eşcinsel Mekanlar: Erkek Eşcinsellerin Toplumsal Cinsiyet Kurulumunun Heteronormativite ile İlişkisi” and finally the third prize was awarded to Meral Akbaş from Middle East Technical University for her article “Dört Duvarın Arasında Gül(ebil)mek: ‘Cop Dansı’na, ‘Lasonil’e, ‘Tam Mahkemelik Morluklar’a Dair”.
At the student conference three sessions were held. At the first session “Thinking Gender Over Space” Avşar Gürpınar and Doğu Durgun presented their articles in which Ayfer Bartu Candan from Boğaziçi University was the discussant. The second session discussed by Bertil Emrah Odel from Koç University was titled “The Interaction of Law and Gender” and the two presentators were Nezihat Bakar and Olcay Karacan. The last session called “Gender Over Language” was discussed by Hülya Adak from Sabancı University and Özlem Ezer and Meral Akbaş were the presantators of this panel.
Following the student conference an award ceremony was held at the Karaköy Communication Center with the participation of the president Nihat Berker; Dicle Koğacıoğlu’s family, colleagues and students.
