Relationship Formation and Maintenance: From New Encounters to Romantic Attachments

Abstract: In this talk, I will present findings from my research program investigating relationship formation and maintenance in adulthood. The first part of the talk will focus on very early stages of relationship formation and feature experimental and observational studies examining how we form impressions of new individuals, to what extent these impressions persist, and what makes a relationship resistant to dissolution. The second part will focus on longitudinal and daily life assessments of fledgling relationships examining how romantic attachments develop over time. Using a multi-method, multidisciplinary approach this work advances our understanding of relationship formation and development from initial moments of acquaintance to more intimate affectional ties.
