HIST doctoral student Maximilian Hartmuth's conference participation

Maximilian Hartmuth, PhD student in history at Sabancı University, has recently participated in the 10th Annual Kokkalis Program Balkans Workshop at Harvard University (February 7/8, 2007).

His presentation formed part of the panel "Multiculturalism in the Balkans", to which he contributed with a paper on the impact of nationalism on cultural heritage management practices in the post-Ottoman region. Drawing upon three recent projects pertaining to the restoration or presentation of historical monuments, he sought to demonstrate how sites the presence of which is perceived as problematic by states or segments of society are being discursively transformed in oftentimes blunt attempts to come to terms with the heritage of an "other". Maximilian's participation in the workshop has been made possible with grants by Harvard University and Sabancı University's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
