In the exhibition titled HANEDEN (belonging to the household) Neslihan Koyuncu constructs the existential relationship between human being and home through domestic objects and visuals. The artist originates from her experiences and imaginary stories that may happen inside a house. Koyuncu reflects her psychological analysis about the places and people in these stories through personal objects and materials such as nightstands, iron boards and muslin cloth.
The house becomes the corner of the world that human beings feel the comfort of home while confronting the vastness of the universe. Bachelard suggests that the house is our first universe, a real cosmos in every sense of the world.
Home is not just a physical shelter for human beings but also an imagination of a space where secrets and memories are kept hidden and protected within the comfort zone. Domestic objects inside home have traces of these memories and secrets that belong to the inhabitant of home. These traces occur by the capacity of objects as "mirrors" that reflect the identity of the owner.
These domestic objects, drawings and photos inside the exhibition tend to remind the forgotten and reveal the invisible to the viewer. The artist creates a scenery with domestic art objects that belongs to the vision of a collective memory palace. Koyuncu also analyzes the possible life career and persona of the domestic objects before they become art objects inside this memory palace.
Born in Eskişehir, Neslihan Koyuncu lived in Antalya and now in Istanbul. She finished her undergraduate studies in 2008 and masters in 2014, both in Visual Arts at Sabanci University. After 2009 she worked as an art director in London and Istanbul until she restarted her artistic career in 2012. She recently had her work exhibited in Siemens Borders and Orbits 15-16.
