EU between regionalization and globalization:  Prospects, Challenges and Contestations

Sabancı University, European Studies Program

April 30, 2015

Minerva Han, Karaköy, İstanbul

The European Studies Program at Sabancı University invites faculty and graduate students of international relations, political science, economics, European Studies and other relevant fields to engage in a one-day workshop which will be held on April 30, 2015 at Minerva Han in Karaköy, Istanbul.

Organized based on the Jean Monnet Module “Contextualizing the European Union in the International Political Economy,” this workshop will discuss the intertwined processes of regionalization and globalization focusing on the EU along with the diverse ways in which it tackles the current challenges.  Exploring the new forms of cooperation and conflict between existing and newly-emerging actors (supranational, multilateral and regional institutions as well as states and non-state alike), it will examine diverse areas such as international trade, investment, energy, aid, crisis, and political ramifications of those. As the increasingly-dynamic interactions between the complex web of actors bring about major economic and political opportunities and challenges, existing institutions become contested at the regional and global level. The workshop endeavors to encompass discussions on such contestations and renegotiations as to the interplay between the EU, its member states, partner states, regional and multilateral organizations. The aim of the workshop is to build a forum for a stimulating discussion and networking between a wide range of participants—junior and senior faculty, graduate students and researchers who work on respective fields. Papers focusing on (but not limited to) the following areas of research will be particularly welcomed:

  • Multilateralism vs. regionalism: Changing approaches and practices
  • Building or stumbling blocs? International and regional trade
  • Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership & implications for the EU and the third countries
  • Rise of new regional blocs in the age of multilateralism
  • Global financial crisis, euro crisis, economic, political & social consequences
  • Multifaceted interactions between the EU and domestic politics
  • EU as the home and host of foreign investment
  • EU’s relations with large emerging countries
  • EU-Turkey relations and degrees of integration
  • EU’s neighborhood policy and its varying impact

Please submit your abstracts (about 300 words), including the title, the author’s name, institutional affiliation, position/occupation/degree program to Dr. Işık Özel (ozel@sabanciuniv.edu). Expected paper length is about 5000-6000 words.
