A New Course from FASS - HIST 331/551: Early Islamic History: A Survey
NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR LEARNING
ABOUT ISLAM AND ISLAMIC HISTORY
After a long interval, the History Program is happy to re-introduce a new and more systematic approach to teaching about Islamic history and civilization. In the past, Early Islamic History: A Survey, double-coded as HIST 331 for upper undergraduates and HIST 531 for graduate students, was offered alternately by Prof. Hakan Erdem and Prof. Hülya Canbakal. From Fall 2016, it is going to be regularly taught by Prof. Ferenc Peter Csirkes, who has recently joined the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Furthermore, this first course, which comes down to the 10th century, will now have a follow-up in the form of Islamic History: The Middle Period (c.945 - 1500), also double-coded as HIST 332/532, which, again, will be regularly offered by Prof. Csirkes from Spring 2016 onward. The entire sequence should provide a solid foundation in this field for all students interested in exploring the historical background to a major socio-political dynamic of our times.
