Conversations on Gender and Arts II: Nour Shantout

 

SU Gender is organizing an event series in collaboration with the Artist Residency Program, Gate 27. Maja Bekan, Nour Shantout and Dominique Hurth, residents of Gate 27, who continue their work in the fields of gender, feminism and migration, will meet with the audience in the event series organized by Gate 27 and SU Gender.

The second session of the event series titled Conversations on Gender and Art will take place on Monday, September 18, 2023 at 18.30 in Karaköy Minerva Han with Nour Shantout in English. Conversations on Gender and Art II: Nour Shantout is facilitated by Gate 27 Advisory Board member and Sabancı University Faculty member of Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Ahu Antmen.

During her Gate 27 period, Shantout will work on her research-based project titled “Searching for the New Dress,”, which explores how Palestinian embroidery is influenced by the migration of Syrian women who took refuge in the Palestinian camp “Shatila” in Lebanon after the war in Syria. The artist will work with non-governmental organizations in Istanbul as well as conduct workshops.

Nour Shantout is an artist and researcher. She was born in Damascus, Syria in 1991, and she has been based in Vienna since 2015.She started studying art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Damascus in 2009 and continued her work abroad. She received her bachelor of visual arts in 2014 at The Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts. She was granted the Helen El Khal prize (2014) and pursued her studies at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. She received her fine arts diploma from the Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien (Textual Sculpture, Prof. Heimo Zobernig) in 2020. She is currently pursuing her PhD studies in philosophy at the same academy, and she is also a visiting lecturer at IZK, The Institute for Contemporary Art, Architecture Faculty of the Graz University of Technology. 

Ahu Antmen is a professor of modern and contemporary art at Sabancı University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Her research is based on issues of modernity, identity and gender in 20th century Turkish art. Besides her teaching, she has worked as art critic for Turkish daily newspapers Cumhuriyet and Radikal.

Gate 27 is an international residency program that aims to facilitate the research and production processes of different practices and to provide a platform for interdisciplinary interaction.
