Parallel Visuals
Media Archaeology as an Artistic Method

by

Jussi Parikka

(Winchester School of Art)

This talk focuses on media archaeology - an interdisciplinary set of theories and ideas in art and media theory - as a way to understand technical media culture. By starting from recent discussion concerning digital and visual arts, sparked off by Claire Bishop's Artforum article "Digital Divide", the talk proceeds to investigate some connections of art and technology. This is done through ideas from media archaeology, introducing the concept, as well as articulating it as a rich set of theories and practices concerning temporality, technical arts, and new directions in art, media and communication. We will discuss not only some inspirations to media archaeological thinking, including Erkki Huhtamo, Siegfried Zielinski and Friedrich Kittler, but also how it can be seen as a practice based method of engaging with the entanglements of new media, old media.
