SSBF Danışma Kurulu

Sabancı Üniversitesi Sanat ve Sosyal Bilimler Fakültesi (SSBF) Danışma Kurulu’nun kurulduğunu duyurmaktan mutluluk duyuyoruz.

Danışma Kurulu, programların ve öğretim üyelerinin hedeflerine en etkin biçimde ulaşmalarına yönelik olarak fakülte yönetimine danışmanlık ve stratejik rehberlik sunmayı amaçlamaktadır. Bunun yanı sıra, SSBF’nin uluslararası görünürlüğünü artırmayı ve kaynak yaratma çalışmalarına katkı sunmayı hedefleyen etkili bir danışma ağı işlevi görmektedir. 

Danışma Kurulu üyeleri beş yıllık süre için atanırlar. Kurul toplantılarının her yıl Bahar döneminde, dönüşümlü olarak hibrit ve yüz yüze formatlarda gerçekleştirilmesi öngörülmektedir.


Şebnem Gümüşçü, Professor of Political Science Middlebury College

Şebnem Gümüşçü is a faculty member in the Department of Political Science at Middlebury College. She received her undergraduate degree in International Relations from Koç University and her MA and PhD in Political Science from the University of Virginia. In 2011, she was a visiting researcher at Yale University's Council on Middle East Studies; from 2012 to 2014, she was a postdoctoral researcher and visiting faculty member at Sabancı University, as well as a research coordinator at Istanbul Policy Center. Her work on democratization and democratic backsliding, political parties, and Islamist movements has been widely published in international journals. Some of her notable publications include: Democracy, Identity, Foreign Policy in Turkey: Hegemony through Transformation (New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2014, co-authored with Fuat Keyman), Democracy or Authoritarianism: Islamist Governments in Turkey, Egypt, and Tunisia (London: Cambridge University Press, 2023), Türkiye’nin Yeni Rejimi: Rekabetçi Otoriterlik (Turkey’s New Regime: Competitive Authoritarianism) (co-authored with Berk Esen and Hakan Yavuzyılmaz, İstanbul: İletişim, 2023)

Nezih Güner, Professor of Economics CEMFI

Nezih Guner is Director and Professor at Centro de Estudios Monetarios y Financieros (CEMFI) in Madrid, Spain, and a CEMFI-Bank of Spain Research Associate.   He is also a Research Affiliate of the Center for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), a Research Fellow of the Institute of Labor Economics (IZA), and a member of the Economic Opportunity Global Working Group (HCEO) at the University of Chicago. He was an Editor of Economic Inquiry, Economic Journal, and the SERIEs (Journal of Spanish Economic Association). He is the Chair of the Research Committee of the European Economic Association. In 2018, he served as the President of the Spanish Economic Association. Nezih Guner received his BA in Economics and Sociology from Bogazici University in 1992 and his PhD from the University of Rochester in 2000. He was an assistant professor of economics at Pennsylvania State University (USA), Queen's University (Canada), Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, and an associate professor at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. Between 2009 and 2016, and between 2000 and 2022, he was a Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA) Research Professor at the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB), and a Research Professor at the Barcelona School of Economics (BSE). Between 2012 and 2015, he also served as the Deputy Director of Research at BSE. Prof. Guner's main research focuses on analyzing the causes, consequences, and implications of changing household and family structure. He worked on building general equilibrium frameworks that explicitly deal with the formation and dissolution of households and joint household decisions. He has also been studying how changes in the family structure alter the way traditional public policies (e.g., taxation and universal basic income) affect the economy. Based on this line of research on family economics, he was awarded a European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant in 2010. Besides his work on family economics, Prof. Guner has recently moved to other areas of macroeconomics. In particular, he has been studying how the misallocation of resources at the micro level can affect aggregate productivity and the role of government policies on the misallocation of resources. Prof. Guner's recent research also focuses on international trade, particularly how labor market frictions and openness interact.

Defne Koz, Designer & Co-founder, Koz Susani Design Inc.

Defne Koz is the co-founder and partner, with Marco Susani, of Koz Susani Design, an award-winning studio based in Chicago, where she designs iconic, innovative, emotionally engaging,best-seller products and experiences. Influenced by her multicultural roots in Turkey and Italy, her designs span from domestic objects to high-tech devices, from hi-touch materials to interaction design, from luxury crafts to mass-manufactured products, always focusing on high-quality design that embraces vision and innovation while preserving human and emotional qualities.

In addition to working on a diverse range of product designs, she also focuses in branding, strategic design, and advising companies on their manufacturing processes.

She has been a member of the board of the Art and Design Advisory Board of Akbank and was a member of the Founding Board of the Istanbul Design Biennale 2012. She has been Trend Board Member at IMM KoelnMesse.She has been a jury member of several award organizations, to name a few: Compasso d’Oro, RedDot, IF DesignAward, Core77, DesignTurkey.

Kaya Şahin, Professor of History - Vice Provost for Global Strategies and International Affairs The Ohio State University

Kaya Şahin, PhD, is the vice provost for global strategies and international affairs, and began his tenure on Nov. 1, 2023. At Ohio State, Şahin will lead the university’s continuing efforts to develop and implement an evolving global strategy in collaboration with students, faculty, and staff. The Office of International Affairs provides leadership and coordination for Ohio State’s international engagement, including through Area Studies Centers; Global Education; Global Gateways in Brazil, China, and India; the Global One Health initiative; international partnerships; and support for international students and scholars.

Şahin previously served as executive associate dean of the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies at Indiana University (IU). He oversaw four departments and 22 centers, institutes, and programs. In this role, he was involved in campus and curriculum internationalization, global academic mobility, academic partnerships, and local and international engagement. Şahin also served as academic director of IU’s Eurasia Gateway, where he worked to enhance academic and institutional relations between IU and potential regional partners.

A member of IU’s Department of History for more than a decade, Şahin held adjunct appointments in Central Eurasian Studies and Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures. He served as director of Renaissance Studies and Islamic Studies and as a member of the IU Press faculty board. He received numerous grants and fellowships from American and European institutions.

Şahin earned a PhD in history from the University of Chicago, an MA in history from Sabancı University, and a BA in political science and international relations from Boğaziçi University. Before college, he attended the French-language Lycée de Galatasaray in Istanbul.

Şahin’s global perspective is built on his personal, academic and administrative experiences. Initially arriving in the United States on an F-1 student visa, he eventually became a naturalized citizen. He has spent the past two decades establishing research collaborations with individuals and institutions worldwide. As a historian of the Ottoman Empire, Şahin has emphasized comparative and regional and global perspectives in his publications. His recent books, both published by Oxford University Press, are Peerless among Princes: The Life and Times of Sultan Süleyman (published in 2023) and Histories of Political Thought in the Ottoman Empire (2025, co-edited with Nedim Nomer).

Özlem Ayduk, Professor of Psychology UC Berkeley

Professor Özlem Ayduk received her B.A. in Psychology and Political Science from Boğaziçi University (1992) and her Ph.D. from Columbia University (1999) where she worked with Prof. Walter Mischel. She joined the Psychology Department at the University of California, Berkeley, in 2002 as an Assistant Professor and became full Professor in 2015. Currently she is serving a 3-year term as Department Chair (2024-2027).

Professor Ayduk’s research interests focus on the risk and protective factors in interpersonal relationships, self-distancing and its role in emotion regulation and on the development of self-control and emotion competencies in young children. She held the Thomas and Ruth Ann Hornaday Chair in Psychology between 2020-2023, and is a fellow of the American Psychological Society, the Society of Personality & Social Psychology, and the Society of Experimental Social Psychology.
