Job Description

Main purpose of the job:

We invite applications for two 3-year early stage research posts (PhD studentships) as part of a Marie Curie Initial Training Network in Electoral Democracy, funded by the European Commission under Framework 7. ELECDEM brings together 11 expert teams from 9 European countries to provide substantive and methodological training in voting behaviour and elections research to a cohort of early stage and experienced researchers. In total, there are 18 research positions available including the two hosted at Sabanci University-Istanbul. The objective of the network and associated projects is to evaluate the functioning of democracies in the context of globalisation and technological and institutional change. Two research projects will be hosted in Politics at Sabanci University: (1) Communication and Mobilisation and (2) Media and Partisanship. We seek 2 researchers to undertake these projects in the process of completing a PhD. 

Researchers will be employed by the University and receive mobility and training allowances. Further information on ELECDEM and the other available research positions within the network can be found at http://huss.exeter.ac.uk/politics/elecdem/.

Main duties and accountabilities:

  • Undertake original research on specified topic.
  • Complete a thesis/project report within 3 years.
  • Undertake research skills training.
  • Contribute independently to training network.
  • Participate in network conferences and workshops.
  • Generate quality research output.

Person Specification:

  • To qualify as an Early Stage Researcher applicants must be in the first 4 years (fulltime equivalent) of their research careers starting at the date of obtaining the degree formally entitling them to embark on a doctorate in Turkey.
  • According to Marie Curie ITN rules, the positions at Sabanci are open to all nationalities except Turkish nationals (though exceptions apply).
  • At the time of appointment, the successful applicant may not have resided or carried out his/her main professional activities or studies in Turkey for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to his/her appointment.

Additional Information Relating to the Post

Salary

The EC funding for these positions provides;

Living Allowance*: 17.250€ /year

Mobility Allowance*: 500€ / month (Researcher without family obligations)

                              800€ / month (Researcher with family obligations)

Travel Allowance: 500€ - 2500€ / once a year (amount depends on distance to host) 

Career exploratory allowance: 2000€ (Single payment)

Expense of researchers (travel to workshops, research costs) managed by host: 300€/month

 

* As for the living and mobility allowance, a correction factor for Turkey: %83,7
