Episodes in the History of Science I
Is Islam an enemy of science? Did the Catholic Church oppress free
thinking? What does it mean to be a scientist in a world where there is
no running water and absolutely no laboratories?
Surgery without anesthetics and antibiotics, anyone? Could astrology be
the reason why we have modern science at all?
Where do we draw the border between myth and knowledge? This course
covers the development of science from the Mesopotamian Ziggurat to
Copernicus's deathbed and is intended to be the first of two consecutive
courses that will help develop a deeper understanding of our own scientific
culture. We will be treating science mainly as a cultural institution, whose
development was neither necessary nor predictable. And we will be
addressing some of the core issues of interest regarding science, such as
the relationship between science and religion or the border between what
counts as science and what does not.
