Russian history I: from the beginnings to the mid-nineteenth century

This survey course covers the political, social and cultural history of Russia from the Kievan period to the mid-nineteenth century. The course starts with a general introduction to Russian geography, culture and state formation and continues to explore major developments and turning points in Russian history, including, amongst others, the Christianisation of Kievan Rus', the Mongol Invasion, the emergence of Moscow and the ‘Gathering of the Lands’, the reign of Ivan the Terrible, the Times of Troubles, the rise of the Romanovs, Tsar Peter I’s reforms and Westernisation, Catherine the Great’s enlightenment as well as the Napoleonic Wars and the reign of Nicholas I.
