HIST 245 CONTINUES WITH NEW INSTRUCTOR
AND EXPANDED “BLACK ATLANTIC” DIMENSION
HIST 245: Men, Ships, and the Sea, originally designed and taught by our founding president the late Tosun Terzioğlu and Halil Berktay, and a favorite elective with generations of undergraduates, is now going to be offered by Dr Aslıgül Berktay, who is an Early Modern specialist in Caribbean and Brazilian slavery in the 17th and 18th centuries. Hence, while retaining its basic maritime history backbone, the course may also be expected to attach somewhat greater weight to the Black Atlantic centuries of slavery and the slave trade between West Africa and South America.
