"The Red Dust of World Politics: Paradigms of Self and Other Compared
between 'The Quiet American' and 'Dream of the Red Chamber'"
Dr. L.H.M. Ling teaches at the
New School, NY. She is the author of Postcolonial
International Relations: Conquest and Desire Between Asia and the West (Palgrave
2002). This is a fascinating study that brings together constructivist
approaches to world politics, international political economy, feminist
theories and post-colonial writings to provide fresh insight into our
understanding of the various layers of ‘East’-‘West’ dynamics and the relations
between China and the ‘West’ in particular. This book and other articles that
came out in the Review of International
Political Economy and International
Studies Quarterly offered invaluable insight into the rise of the ‘Asian
Tigers’ and the economic crisis that followed. Her co-authored book (with Anna
Agathangelou) entitled From Neoliberal
Empire to Multiple World: Transforming Violence, Desire and Complicity in
Contemporary World Politics is about to come out from Routledge. This book
offers insight into ‘East’-‘West’ dynamics in post-9/11 period. What
characterizes Ling’s work is its interdisciplinary nature. She pulls together
the insights of International Relations, Political Economy, Political Science
and Literature (poetry in particular). Dr. Ling’s current research draws on
Chinese literature as a source of epistemological principles for world
politics.
