Abstract: In the digital era, intelligent virtual assistants such as Siri and Alexa are becoming ubiquitous in our daily lives, including formal and informal learning settings. These new tools raise important theoretical questions: What intuitions do children and adults have about the capacities of these systems? How do they search for information using these devices? In this talk, I will address these questions by presenting a series of empirical research centered on children’s and adults’ question-asking behavior to voice assistants.

Bio: Cansu Oranç (Ph.D. in Psychology, Koç University) is a postdoctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin, Germany. She works at the Max Planck Research Group iSearch - Information Search, Ecological and Active Learning Research with Children. Her research focuses on children’s information search and learning with technology. She is specifically interested in children’s intuitions about and interactions with social robots and intelligent virtual assistants.
