Psychology Seminar: Melisa Menceloğlu (Brown University)

Talk Title: Temporal orienting of attention for perception and action

Abstract: Just as we can orient attention in space and to certain object features, we can also orient attention in time. Temporal orienting of attention can then facilitate forthcoming perception and action (e.g., estimating the duration of a yellow traffic light when driving). In this talk, I will first present a series of behavioral studies demonstrating that (1) not just explicitly but also implicitly learned temporal structures can lead to temporal orienting, (2) temporal orienting weights visual signals more strongly than auditory signals in the context of audiovisual competition, and (3) temporal orienting is controlled independently from attentional orienting to specific sensory modalities across the auditory and visual modalities. Second, I will present EEG studies where I examine the effects of temporal orienting (1) on ongoing sensory processing using auditory and visual steady-state evoked potentials and (2) on motor preparation by focusing on movement-related and anticipatory neural responses. Lastly, I will briefly discuss how measuring continuous movements can reveal cognitive processes that traditional response-time methods may overlook in the context of response conflict and temporal orienting of attention.

Bio: Melisa Menceloglu is a postdoctoral fellow in the Cognitive, Linguistic & Psychological Sciences Department at Brown University. She received her PhD in Psychology from Northwestern University in 2020 and her BA in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2014. Dr. Menceloglu’s research focuses on perception, action, and attentional processes in the temporal domain. She uses behavioral and EEG methods to understand how we orient attention to specific points in time, and how auditory and visual perceptual processes and goal-directed action are altered with temporal orienting of attention.
