Kurdish Nationalism: Identity, Ideology and Geopolitics in the Middle East

Abstract: Why does nationalism not unite the ethnic brethren? This research examines the paradox of Kurdish nationalism, which, despite shared ethnic identity and historical grievances, remains fragmented across ideological and organizational lines. The study investigates why nationalism, often perceived as a unifying force, has failed to consolidate the Kurdish political movement in the Middle East. By employing a comparative-historical methodology, the research explores intra-Kurdish rivalries, particularly the ideological divide between the Barzani-led movement in Iraq and pro-Kurdish movement in Turkey. Analyzing case studies from Iraq, Syria, Turkey, and Iran, the study delves into the historical and contemporary struggles among variety of contemporary Kurdish nationalist organizations. Beyond cultural explanations, this study highlights the role of geopolitical interests, international alliances, and strategic organizational competition in shaping the fragmented landscape of Kurdish nationalism. The findings offer a nuanced understanding of Kurdish political dynamics and provide insights into broader discussions on nationalism, statehood, and regional stability in the Middle East.
