Recipher 3
With the third version of the series, “Recipher 3”, Recipher introduces new works produced within the scope of Sabancı University VA345 Creative Coding course to the audiences. The VA345 Creative Coding course, which has been given by Selçuk Artut, Faculty Member in the Visual Arts and Visual Communication Design Program since 2018, aims to use computation as an effective tool in creativity by embodying computer coding as an artistic discourse.
As in previous exhibitions, the Recipher 3 exhibition aims to reconstruct the broken bridges between the present and the past by excavating deep into the vast history of art and culture. The Geometric Art, largely influenced by the discipline of geometry and created by using various geometric elements and shapes, has undergone different evolutions in the historical process. This technique of art, of which we can find examples in many corners of the world, has a very important place especially in Islamic Art and Architecture. Today, we can often see the most elegant examples of this kind in our own country and in the neighborhood. In this genre, which rises in the middle of the concepts of arts and craftsmanship, the works maintained were only created with the help of compass and ruler in the past. With the use of compass and ruler, angles could be divided into certain numbers of equal parts with different techniques, and the complex symmetrical relations between geometric shapes could be applied as perfectly as possible. Within the scope of the VA345 Creative Coding course, the geometric and mathematical relationships in these patterns were examined and it was aimed to obtain these patterns in the computer environment. In the Recipher 3 exhibition, you may see the works of this intense interdisciplinary engagement between art and science. It should be noted that Recipher 3 does not consider the displayed artworks independently of the codes that render those patterns. Because coding should also be considered as an artistic act.
In the works presented to the audience within the scope of the exhibition, the artists challenge up-to-date interpretations of the works of the period with the possibilities of today. The effort to realize art by producing authentic software is clearly seen in several examples of generative arts today. From this point of view, Recipher 3 teleports us back to the past and underlines that today's computer art did not emerge out of nowhere, questions the relationships between mathematics and art, and sheds light on the historical process of generative algorithmic art.
