Prof. Ayşe Kadıoğlu joined EUI/STG as a Senior Fellow

Ayşe Kadıoğlu is spending her academic leave at the European University Institute/School of Transnational Governance (EUI/STG) in Florence, Italy during the Spring semester of 2025. Sabancı University and the EUI have signed a MoU in 2024.

On February 18, 2025, Kadıoğlu gave a seminar titled “Manifestations of Autocratic Legalism: The Turkish Case.” This event was part of the STG Research Seminar Series and Transnational Democracy Cluster. It was held in hybrid format at the STG premises in Palazzo Buontalenti, Hannah Arendt Seminar Room.

With this seminar, EUI/STG welcomed Professor Ayşe Kadıoğlu as a Senior Fellow at the Florence School of Transnational Governance. In her seminar, Kadıoğlu explored the concept of autocratic legalism by focusing on Türkiye as a case study. As a sequel to her earlier work, she highlighted changes to the Law on Elections and Electoral Records and The Municipal Law while portraying how legal shifts created uneven electoral fields and enabled the replacement of elected mayors with appointed ones. The presentation and the ensuing discussion included comparative insights from Professor Kadıoğlu's earlier work on new authoritarian political actors in Türkiye, Venezuela, and Poland.
