The Purple Certificate Summer School

We held the first of the three trainings planned by the Purple Certificate Program for the 2022-2023 period between September 10-11 and September 17-18. More than 40 teachers and teacher candidates participated in the training, as we addressed various topics intersectionally, ranging from disability to health, politics to discrimination. The training ended with two workshops that allowed the participants to explore the Purple Folder materials and develop their own materials in evenings sessions. Two more trainings will be organized until March 2023. Training calls for applications will be announced soon via SU Gender’s social media accounts and e-mail groups.

Application Deadline for Dicle Koğacıoğlu Article Award Extended

The application deadline for this year's Dicle Koğacıoğlu Article Award has been extended until October 10th at 18.00. Click here for detailed information about the application requirements. Dicle Koğacıoğlu Article Award is an article prize given by SU Gender with the support of Sabancı University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences in memory of our colleague, friend, and sociologist Dicle Koğacıoğlu who passed away in 2009. Since 2010, the award aims to support gender-focused research on Turkey and young researchers involved in the field. The award is open to Master’s and PhD students, and graduates of Master’s programs who completed their degree within the last two years.

Application Deadline for Şirin Tekeli Research Award Extended

The application deadline for this year's Şirin Tekeli Research Award has been extended until October 12th at 18.00. Click here for detailed information about the award. SU Gender initiated the Şirin Tekeli Research Award in memory of Şirin Tekeli, who has pioneered work in the fields of democracy, academic freedom, gender equality, and feminism. In its fifth year, the award is awaiting applications. Aiming to support and encourage gender-focused research in Turkey, we hope to provide a nurturing and inspiring platform that will bring together researchers who work in this field.

Caring Workspaces: Civil Society and Social Enterprises

“Caring Workspaces: Civil Society and Social Enterprises Guide” was published as part of the Caring Workplaces project. This project is a pilot project supported by the RESISTIRÉ research project (RESpondIng to outbreaks through co-creaTIve sustainable inclusive equality stRatEgies), of which SU Gender is a part, and carried out in partnership with Postane Istanbul and Truth Justice Memory Center. The launch meeting was held on September 29th to introduce the guide and announce the Caring Workspaces Award campaign for civil society and social enterprise organizations. Nazlı Türker attended the meeting to share the findings of the RESISTIRÉ research and the pilot project process.

Workshop on Expanding Our Fields of Expression Through Expressive Art

We organized the workshop “Expanding Our Fields of Expression Through Expressive Art” moderated by Aylin Vartanyan on September 21st. 20 teachers and prospective teachers attended the workshop. After an introduction to the theory of expressive art, participants carried out applied and participatory activities. This workshop also aims to ensure a more creative expression for the applications submitted to the 2nd Gender in Education Awards.

 

Which Events Did We Attend?

Conferences, Workshops, and Panels

●  The meeting of the EU Horizon 2020 research project ReROOT (Arrival Infrastructures as Sites of Integration for Recent Newcomers), of which SU Gender is a part, took place in Dortmund between September 26 - 28. Project manager Marhabo Saparova attended the meeting to share the research report.

●  Özge Ertem presented “An Overview of Nineteenth Century Famine History: Questions, Themes, Sources, Imaginaries” at the 3rd International Congress of Ottoman Studies (OSARK) held at Medeniyet University between September 7-9.

What’s Next Month?

Online Book Event with Evren Savcı will take place on October 13th

Evren Savcı will present her book “Queer in Translation: Sexual Politics under Neoliberal Islam” at an online event on Thursday, October 13th between 17.00-18.30. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session and a discussion of the book. The event will take place in English. Click here to register.

Events and seminars next month

Deniz Gündoğan Ibrişim will be a visiting scholar at the Department of Comparative Literature and the Department of Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Michigan, where she will speak at a seminar titled “New Approaches in Trauma and Memory Studies” between October 6-7. Gündoğan Ibrişim will also give an online lecture on Feminist Narratology at the Feminist Research Methodologies and Digital Feminist Research seminar at The New School on October 10th. On October 14th, Gündoğan Ibrişim will give the keynote lecture at the Ecocriticism and Sustainability Conference of the Turkish Language and Literature Program at Bilkent University.
