Psychology Seminar: Feyza Çorapçı (Boğaziçi University)

A Prevention Science Approach to Reduce Developmental Problems and Promote Competence in Early Childhood

Prof. Feyza Çorapçı

A significant number of children and adolescents worldwide suffer from emotional and behavioral disorders, and many children in low- and middle-income countries face various risks that prevent them from achieving their developmental potential. In particular, growing up under conditions of major stress and poverty in the first three years of life impairs children’s development more deeply than any other developmental period. Prevention science is dedicated to understanding potential risk factors of such developmental problems and identifying protective factors of self-regulatory competence. This information is then used to develop evidence-based programs to prevent future problems in children and promote the well-being of children, families, and communities. Early childhood programs target risk factors before they become less amenable to change and stabilize as predictors of future problems. In this seminar, critical child, family, and contextual risk and protective factors will be discussed, including studies conducted with samples of Turkish infants, toddlers, and older children. An early childhood program utilizing home visitation in disadvantaged neighborhoods of Istanbul will be illustrated as a preventive intervention example implemented by local municipalities.
