(Sakarya University Department of History)
Abstract
Within the Islamic history Caliphate is known to be a highly significant institution, both religiously as well as politically. Despite the controversy about the emergence of the importance of Caliphate among the Ottomans, it can be said that the Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca (1774) signified the beginning of the diplomatic importance of this institution. This presentation will focus on the internal as well as international factors which led to the instrumentalization of the Caliphate, and the evolution of these processes from the 18th to the early 20th centuries.
