What does your current job involve? What’s a typical day like?

In addition to monetary policy, the Central Bank works in order to ensure financial stability and to reduce systemic risks. My primary responsibilities include designing macroprudential policies, which are among the tools used in this area, and ensuring the smooth operation. For example, the establishment of reserve requirements is a mechanism from start to finish, and its design is one of the key determinants for price stability and inflation. This process naturally creates an incredible abundance of data. Whenever I find the time during the day, I enjoy trying to build models to discover new things in this data.

What was your favorite course in the economics program, and why?

I can mention the Advanced Microeconomics and Game Theory courses I took from Professor Mehmet Barlo without a doubt. I was feeling the same way even in the morning after I handed in my 28-page assignment, despite my small handwriting. In these courses, you learn about the contributions Walras made to our world despite not being a physicist, that Shapley and Shubik are not the same person, what Edgeworth could achieve, and that you should never use the term “externality.” As you learn about decision theory, your life progresses toward “Pareto Optimal,” and you find peace in subgame equilibrium. As you notice Arrow-Debreu’s jokes appearing in your conversations with friends, you’ll realize that without the “core,” this life would be unbearable.

Once you understand the foundation you learn in these two courses, you’ll be able to grasp all economics courses better, and when you feel that, you'll feel more fresher. Because the concepts you’ll have a very high longevity in many areas outside of business life.

What advice would you give to current undergraduates?

Studying and learning mathematics is very important. Also, they should not rush into a field just because it is “the new global trend.” Working life is not just about making money; we will be there for at least the next 40 years.

They should attend classes in departments where they can ask whatever questions they are curious about. Curiosity will take them to great places, and they will also earn good money in the end. They shouldn’t waste their university days thinking only about their careers; at least they should enjoy Fasshane.
